Variants & Custom Fields

Offer sizes, colors and other options with their own price and stock, and collect details like engraving text from buyers.

Variants

Variants let a single product come in several options, for example a T-shirt in three sizes and two colors. Variants are for physical products only.

Limits

Two variants on the same product can't have the same name, and options within one variant must all be different.

Setting up variants

Open the variant manager

In the Variants section, click Add / Manage Variants.

Add a variant

Click Add Variant, enter a Variant Name (for example "Size"), and add its Options (for example Small, Medium, Large). Use Edit or Delete on a variant to change it later.

Choose what varies

Under Variant Settings:

  • Price varies for each variant: each combination gets its own price. The main Price field is disabled, and Show Old Price is turned off.
  • Stock varies for each variant: each combination gets its own stock count. The In Stock and Inventory Qty fields are hidden.

Fill in the combinations table

Click Done. A Variant Combinations table lists every combination (3 sizes × 2 colors = 6 rows), with a Price and/or Stock column for whatever you set to vary. Use Hide Table / Show Table to collapse it.

Save the product

Variant changes are saved only when you click Save (or Add Product) on the product form.

If Price varies is on, every combination needs a price (0 is allowed, less than 1,000,000). Otherwise the save fails with "Variant combination … is missing a price." If Stock varies is on, a blank stock cell is saved as 0, which means that combination is sold out.

What buyers see

  • Buyers choose an option for each variant on the product page before adding to cart.
  • If the price varies, the product shows From followed by the lowest combination price. The price updates when the buyer picks options.
  • If stock varies, the product page says "Select options to see availability" until the buyer picks a combination. Sold-out combinations can't be added to the cart.
  • The old (crossed-out) price is never shown for products with variants.

If neither "Price varies" nor "Stock varies" is on, buyers still choose an option (useful for things like a color choice), but every combination uses the product's main price and stock.

Editing variants on a live product

When you save, the product's variants are replaced with whatever is in the variant manager, so double-check the price and stock for each combination before you save. Orders already placed keep the variant the buyer chose.

Custom fields

Custom fields put input boxes on the product page so buyers can tell you something about their item, such as engraving text, a name for a personalised print, or a gift message. They work on both physical and digital products.

ItemLimit
Fields per product3
Field label80 characters
TypesText (buyer can type up to 500 characters) or Number (whole numbers)

To add one, go to Custom Fields, click Add Field, then enter a Label (for example "Engraving text"), choose a Type, and turn on Required if the buyer must fill it in. Fields with an empty label are ignored. Use the remove button to delete a field.

The buyer's answers are saved with that item in the cart and the order, so you see them when you fulfil the order.
